Firetail Orchids Cymbidium Flask List 2011/12

This list has now closed and no further orders will be taken.

Introduction

Welcome to the second seedling flask list issued by Firetail Orchids.

This list is made up of crosses from the 2010 flowering season, when we attempted far too many crosses with great success!  We harvested more than 200 pods, of which we have listed 59, which we have assessed as being the cream of the crop!  If there is some colour/size/time of year that you are looking for, but we have not included, let us know by email and we may be able to help either immediately, or in the future.

We continue our association with Kevin Black who has undertaken and will undertake all of his usual tasks in the management of the list.  We appreciate his help.

Trevor and Pam Hughes

FLASK LIST B, 2011/2012
Intermediate Seedling Flasks
B 01 Katy's Gold ‘Archie’Katy's Gold ‘Archie’ x Valley Legend ‘Gee Whiz’Valley Legend ‘Gee Whiz’
April/May.  Yellow.  We flowered more than 200 Katy's Gold seedlings but kept only three of the most productive with the darkest alba yellow flowers (many were green/yellow).  Flowering in April, Archie is the earliest of those kept.  It has good upright spikes with high flower counts.  We have a high opinion of ‘Gee Whiz’, because it has been producing a number of very shapely and productive results for us.  We cannot wait for these!
B 02 Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’ x Kuranulla ‘Maestro’Kuranulla ‘Maestro’
June.  White.  ‘Stevie’ is one of the best parents for producing plants with small foliage, upright spikes and a mass of blooms.  ‘Maestro’ is a quality standard clear white with full shape and lightly marked large lip.  This is an exciting cross, similar in many ways to the Pearly Gates grex (Jimbo Tupp x Gardalvin)Pearly Gates 'Angel'.
B 03 Jessie Khan ‘Strawberry’Jessie Khan ‘Strawberry’ x Ruby Valley ‘Madison’Ruby Valley ‘Madison’
June.  Pink.  ‘Madison’ is highly regarded for its tall, upright spikes and super flower counts.  The blooms have very good shape and dark purple/red colour with a wide lip.  ‘Strawberry’ is early, and also has upright spikes with good counts.  Something very special here as both plants are good growing & multiple spike.
B 04 Cracked Pepper 'Adele'Cracked Pepper ‘Adele’ x Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’
June.  Pink.  ‘Adele’ is a flowering machine with tall strong stems with masses of light pink intermediate flowers.  It lacks shape somewhat, but has good shape in its background.  ‘Evie’ has a well-deserved reputation for producing flowers of better quality than itself, including the FCC, Serhan's Passion ‘Marion’.
B 05 Akebono ‘Dynamic’Akebono ‘Dynamic’ x Valley Olympic ‘Lachie’
June/July.  Pink.  Registered as Templestowe's Charm.  In B 11 below we have used the same parents as the original cross.  Here with parents that each flower earlier, we will get a similar but earlier result.  ‘Dynamic’ has proven its status as a quality parent.  ‘Lachie’ is a soft pink of good shape held on strong upright spikes with good flower balance.  Lovely mid to soft pinks with nice well-displayed contrasting lips.
B 06 Drouin Masterpiece 'Tango'Drouin Masterpiece ‘Tango’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Justin’
July.  Orange.  The Drouin Masterpiece grex is performing well on the showbench.  ‘Tango’ is one of the best, with good deep orange flowers of excellent shape and substance.  ‘Justin’ is also orange, with an excellent wide lip from its Coratea ‘Rewa’ parent.  We expect its taller stems to lift the flowers above the foliage.
B 07 Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’ x Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’
July.  Yellow.  This is a cross that Kevin Black has waited a while to see made.  He tells us that some years ago Noel Grundon crossed ‘Stevie’ with the yellow, Winter Wonder ‘Crystal Ball’.  The resultant seedlings were yellow, so we can expect the same here.  ‘Emphatic’ is a very productive straight spiked yellow of impressive quality.  ‘Stevie’ continues to impress - expect classy quality blooms on great spikes here.
B 08 Akebono ‘Dynamic’Akebono ‘Dynamic’ x Darch Joy ‘Little Toy’
July.  Pink.  ‘Little Toy’ is a productive mid to deep pink, with nice upright spikes and a very strong full red-barred lip.  It was Grand Champion of a show in Sydney in 2010.  ‘Dynamic’ also has similar properties.  A great combination for this colour range.
B 09 Dolly ‘Featherhill’ (4N) x Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’
July.  Yellow.  Here is another high quality cross between two outstanding, highly regarded parents.  ‘Emphatic’ is named for its intense clear colour, and generally albas will intensify most colours that they are crossed with.  We are daring to hope for a One Tree Hill (Dolly x Coraki) type result (no albas, only carriers), productive and outstanding!
B 10 Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’Jimbo Tupp ‘Stevie’ x Flaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOCFlaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOC
July.  Pink/Brown.  Over many years and crosses too numerous to mention, ‘Stevie’ has proven that it reflects shape and colour.  ‘Kirrawee’ offers both of these qualities, as well as matching the great spike habit of ‘Stevie’.  These will be excellent.
B 11 Akebono ‘Dural’Akebono ‘Dural’ x Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’Valley Olympic ‘Pink Perfection’
July/August.  Pink.  Registered as Templestowe's Charm.  This is the exact remake of a successful grex made by David Wain.  At least one plant has been awarded (‘Matthew’, HCC OSCOV)Templestowe's Charm 'Matthew' HCC.  A group of these plants were regarded so highly by judges at the Cymbidium Orchid Society of Victoria that they made an award of quality.  The plants we have seen are stunning and beautiful, and we expect many more high quality award-standard pinks here.  Also see B 05 above using different parents that flower earlier.
B 12 Valley Zenith ‘Concorde’ x Ruby Eyes ‘Red Baron’ (4N)Ruby Eyes 'Red Baron' (4N)
August.  Brown/Khaki.  Every year we do a few crosses that might be described as adventurous, often with spectacular results.  Relevant examples with green are Firetail SpriteFiretail Sprite 'The Leprechaun'and Firetail IntuitionFiretail Intuition 'Honey'.  ‘Concorde’ and ‘Red Baron’ are class parents.  There will be something different to see with this cross, with a mix of upright, arching and pendulous.
Small Standard Seedling Flasks
B 13 Firetail Journey ‘Debbie’Firetail Journey ‘Debbie’ x Olympic Swimmer ‘Lucas’Olympic Swimmer ‘Lucas’
May.  Green.  ‘Debbie’ is a May flowering productive pale green of good shape and substance.  The shape of ‘Lucas’ needs improvement, but it has strong attractive colour, including on its outstanding lip.  This is the type of cross that is bringing us closer to producing early plants with mid-season attributes.
B 14 Valley Coral ‘Gemini’Valley Coral ‘Gemini’ x Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’
May/June.  Pink.  ‘Gemini’ is very early (April for us) and for that time of the year has good shape and colour, small foliage and numerous spikes.  ‘Evie’ is an outstanding parent and has a well-deserved reputation for producing flowers of better quality than itself, including the FCC, Serhan's Passion ‘Marion’.  A great way to start the season with a range of colours.
B 15 Valley Olympic ‘Rose’ x Memoria Joan Bryant ‘Keen’ AM OSCOVMemoria Joan Bryant ‘Keen’ AM OSCOV
June.  Pink.  ‘Rose’ is the earliest of the Valley Olympics.  It has smaller bulbs and foliage than the better-known ‘Pink Perfection’, but, like it, also has stems that are a bit short.  It has a good spike habit and colour.  ‘Keen’ is a powerful full-shaped pink with tall stems.  Stunning early blooms on strong upright spikes above the foliage.
B 16 Artistic ‘Piper’Artistic ‘Piper’ x Valley Zenith ‘Concorde’
June/July.  Green.  ‘Piper’ is an apple green intermediate that flowers prolifically in early May.  ‘Concorde’ is a well-regarded late season green standard parent with good flower count and a strong upright spike.  ‘Piper’ will benefit from ‘Concorde’s taller stems and heavy red-barred lips with white throats.  Some may flower in May and August.
B 17 Royal Winter ‘Ikeda’Royal Winter ‘Ikeda’ x Firetail Showtime ‘Cabaret’Firetail Showtime ‘Cabaret’
June/July.  White.  ‘Ikeda’ is a May flowering, full-shaped, non-staining, flat white that has demonstrated to us that it can pass its good qualities on to its progeny.  Its weaknesses are bendy stems and a flower count that needs improvement.  ‘Cabaret’, flowering prolifically in August on good upright stems, will certainly address these weaknesses.  Again we aim to bring forward peak season attributes, perhaps even some in May?
B 18 Red Fury ‘Checkpoint Charlie’Red Fury ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ x Evelyn Victoria ‘Heidi’Evelyn Victoria ‘Heidi’
July.  Pink.  ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ has very strong tall upright spikes with very good shaped red-spotted quality blooms of heavy substance.  ‘Heidi’ has been described by Sel Mumford, President of a Wollongong orchid society, as a perfect orchid for a novice with its reasonable shape and no-nonsense flowering habit.  It is a production mericlone at our nursery and if we get a bit busy we can leave our Heidis and their upright stems to look after themselves!  This cross will produce plants that flower prolifically and require minimal grooming.
B 19 Foxfire Sunset ‘Amelia’ x Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’
July.  Yellow.  ‘Amelia’ is a full-shaped light yellow intermediate with a nice red-spotted lip, with high flower counts held on very strong self-supporting upright spikes.  ‘Phoebe’ is an attractive light yellow with a broad well-displayed white lip with a narrow red bar.  We think these will be pretty, growing and flowering easily.
B 20 Gold Carrot ‘Dale’ x Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’
July.  Orange.  We kept half a dozen Gold Carrots for their very productive tall spikes with very good counts and their eye-catching tropical sunset colours.  ‘Dale’ is typical, with orange flowers with a red lip.  With bright flowers of heavy substance, ‘Mojo Filter’ is a stunning dark orange overlaid with brown and catches the eye with its red and orange lip.  A great combination for an outstanding colourful result.
B 21 Firetail Apprentice 'Brooke'Firetail Apprentice ‘Brooke’ x Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’
July/August.  Yellow.  ‘Brooke’ is from one of our first ever crosses and impressed us with its productivity – masses of light yellow intermediate flowers on tall stems.  ‘Wildcakes’ is a new addition to the breeding bank, which came to us as a single growth in a raffle!  Its stems are a bit short but it is a very productive multi-spiking light standard yellow of good shape and substance with a red lip.
B 22 Firetail Showtime ‘Cabaret’Firetail Showtime ‘Cabaret’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
August.  White.  ‘Cabaret’ is a slightly off-white well-balanced small standard with a good spike and production.  ‘Belinda’ is the whitest Kimberley Splash that we have seen and it is a quality bloom with wide segments, heavy substance and flower counts of 20 and more.  You can expect top class whites with bright pink/red lips and strong stems in this cross.
B 23 Show White ‘Ikeda’Show White ‘Ikeda’ x Valley Splash ‘Awesome’Valley Splash ‘Awesome’
August.  White.  Remake of the Firetail Showtime grex using the original parents.  We have remade this cross because of the excellent varieties obtained the first timeFiretail Showtime 'Chicago'Firetail Showtime 'Cabaret'. We are confident that these varieties would perform very well on the showbench, but do not have the time to prepare them for showing – besides they are usually carrying pods!  Last time there was a surprisingly high proportion that did not have any sign of the 'Awesome' splash coming through, but many had its upright dorsal sepal giving round shape.
B 24 Foxfire Crush ‘Hamlet’ x Gold Carrot ‘Chip’
August.  Brown/Orange.  Similar to B 20, but later.  ‘Hamlet’ is an intensely coloured orange yellow, overlaid dark brown with an impressive wide lip.  It is similar to, but darker than 'Bee-Sting'Foxfire Crush 'Bee-Sting'.  ‘Chip’ is a bright orange large intermediate with high flower counts and good flower arrangement on tall upright stems.  All of these will be colourful, but those inheriting the best qualities of each parent will be special.
B 25 Coratea ‘Rewa’ x Blazing Carrot ‘Blazer’Blazing Carrot ‘Blazer’
August.  Orange.  ‘Rewa’ has a well-deserved reputation for passing on very wide lips, strong colour and heavy substance.  In this cross with a known flowering machine, the multiple tall spiking red ‘Blazer’, we are expecting masses of strong coloured orange blooms with big wide red lips.
B 26 Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’Foxfire Crush ‘Bee-Sting’ x Blazing Carrot ‘Rabble-Rouser’
August.  Orange.  ‘Bee-Sting’ is possibly our best orange, its stunning wide red and gold lip is the best that we have, the spike is upright and the flower count is good.  ‘Rabble-Rouser’ is another flowering machine, having masses of brown blooms with a brown lip.  Our Blazing Carrots continue to be our most productive plants, producing many strong, straight, upright stems requiring little or no grooming.  We expect a very good result with this cross.
Standard Seedling Flasks
B 27 Dural Snow ‘Maytime’ x Firetail Necessity ‘Annie’
May/June.  White alba.  ‘Maytime’, by Gordon Giles, is a Mother's Day white alba with good production on a good spike.  It was thought to be a triploid and therefore sterile.  In recent years we achieved limited germination with other crosses, but here with ‘Annie’, also a white alba, germination has been very good, suggesting that it must be a tetraploid.
B 28 Firetail Spectrum ‘Innocence’ x Foxfire Khan ‘Sophie’Foxfire Khan 'Sophie'
May/June.  Cream.  ‘Innocence’ has prolific upright stems while the flowers in early May are slightly creamy off-white with a strong pink-barred lip.  ‘Sophie’ is one of our favourite early flowers.  It has apricot and peach tones overlaying rich cream and has wide segments and heavy substance, the flowers being quite flat and well presented on strong upright stems without grooming.
B 29 Firetail Eternal ‘Clare’Firetail Eternal ‘Clare’ x Memoria Joan Bryant ‘Keen’ AM OSCOVMemoria Joan Bryant ‘Keen’ AM OSCOV
May/June.  Pink.  Here is another step in our progress towards top quality early flowers.  Our early pink ‘Clare’ already demonstrates considerable progress, but with the very good tall stemmed ‘Keen’, the flowers will be lifted further out of the foliage.  It is a pet hate of ours to see red markings on the lips of pink flowers – here we can be certain the lips will have pink markings that match the rest of the bloom!
B 30 Firetail Grapevine ‘Dianne’ x Valley Van Hoogenband ‘Discus’Valley Van Hoogenband 'Discus'
May/June.  Green.  ‘Dianne’ is a pale green early May large standard.  With ‘Discus’, Valley Orchids demonstrated that attractive flowers of very high quality can be produced through "pot plant" breeding.  Again, here we are attempting to move that quality forward.
B 31 Foxfire Stones ‘Keith Richards’Foxfire Stones ‘Keith Richards’ x Foxfire Khan ‘Sophie’Foxfire Khan 'Sophie'
May/June.  Cream.  ‘Keith Richards’ is a quality June orange of excellent substance having a good spike with a big wide orange-red edged lip with a white throat.  ‘Sophie’ has apricot and peach tones overlaying rich cream and has wide segments and heavy substance, the flowers being quite flat and well presented on strong upright stems in May.  Colourwise, we cannot be certain, but expect cream with complementary highlights.
B 32 Firetail Powerhouse ‘Sun Spots’Firetail Powerhouse ‘Sun Spots’ x Cadel Evans ‘Colonial’
May/June.  Red.  ‘Sunspots’ is a May light red overlaid with deep red lines and spots, the spike is tall and strong and the colour combination along with its bright red lip is eye-catching.  ‘Colonial’ has a quality June red bloom of full shape with a nice balanced red-barred lip.  ‘Colonial’ has Khan Flame ‘April’ as one parent, so we are expecting a high proportion to be early, again bringing quality forward.
B 33 Kimberley Splash ‘Olivia Clare’Kimberley Splash ‘Olivia Clare’ x Kuranulla ‘Maestro’Kuranulla ‘Maestro’
May/July.  White.  ‘Olivia Clare’ has a strong upright spike and good counts of well presented round flat flowers, having inherited an upright dorsal sepal from Valley Splash ‘Awesome’.  Under our conditions it displays too much blushing, but we expect the ultra-clean ‘Maestro’ to clean this up.  ‘Maestro’ has a tall spike, high bloom count and very good shape with a near concolour lip.  We are of the view that Australian whites tend to be somewhat inbred, and seek to address this by introducing radically different parentage whenever we can (the other parent of ‘Olivia Clare’ is Khan Flame ‘Raquel’).
B 34 Valley Legend ‘Gee Whiz’Valley Legend ‘Gee Whiz’ x Glowing Gold ‘Central’Glowing Gold ‘Central’
May/July.  Yellow.  ‘Gee Whiz’ is a May full-shaped "grellow" but when crossed with a yellow gives back strong yellow.  ‘Central’ is a July strong upright spiked good-shaped medium yellow with some mid-red lines through the petals and sepals.  We are expecting strong yellow blooms with nicely displayed lips on strong upright stems.
B 35 Red Nelly ‘Purple Satin’Red Nelly ‘Purple Satin’ x Firetail Impulse ‘Magenta’Firetail Impulse ‘Magenta’
May/July.  Red/Pink.  The highly regarded free-flowering ‘Purple Satin’ has good upright spikes in late July, the purple/red colour is even and it has a well-displayed matching purple/red edge lip.  ‘Magenta’ has very good shape and fantastic colour in May.  These will be colourful and free flowering, and bring mid-season characteristics forward.
B 36 Margaret Thatcher ‘Memories’ x Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’
May/July.  Yellow.  ‘Memories’ flowers earlier and has a darker yellow bloom, a darker red lip and a more powerful stem than the better-known ‘Perfection’.  ‘Emphatic’ is a very productive straight, tall, multi-spiking, clear, intense yellow of impressive quality and twenty plus blooms per stem.  Its weakness is furls in the lip, which ‘Memories’ will address.
B 37 Kuranulla ‘Maestro’Kuranulla ‘Maestro’ x Awesome Era ‘Mia’
June.  White.  ‘Maestro’ is a quality standard clear white with full shape and lightly marked large lip.  The Awesome Era grex, OE 43 by Battack Orchids, has been producing a number of outstanding whites.  ‘Mia’, flowered by Sel Mumford, is a large, clear, flat bloom with no hint of the ‘Awesome’ blush.  Again, a chance to combat white inbreeding.
B 38 Foxfire Stones ‘Keith Richards’Foxfire Stones ‘Keith Richards’ x Firetail Intuition ‘Marcus’Firetail Intuition ‘Marcus’
June/July.  Orange/Khaki.  This is one of our adventurous crosses aimed squarely at the "any other colour" class.  The orange ‘Keith Richards’ has the mainly green ‘Mick Jagger’Foxfire Stones 'Mick Jagger'as a sibling, while the khaki ‘Marcus’ has the light brown ‘Honey’Firetail Intuition 'Honey'as a sibling.  Not in doubt are prolific blooms with wide segments and broad lips, on upright no-nonsense stems.  Every one different, no two the same!
B 39 Kuranulla ‘Maestro’Kuranulla ‘Maestro’ x Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’
June/July.  White.  These are two of our favourite breeding plants.  Both plants grow and flower easily, setting 20 or more blooms per stem on a large plant.  Under our high light levels, ‘Belinda’ (a sibling of ‘Olivia Clare’ in B 33) displays some unwelcome red sun-staining, but ‘Maestro’ is an end product of decades of work at Bryants to eliminate sun-staining, and we confidently expect a good result, particularly if lower light levels are provided.  This will be a stunning white result in all respects.
B 40 Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’Kimberley Splash ‘Belinda’ x Lovely Debut ‘Kaitlin’Lovely Debut ‘Kaitlin’
July.  White.  Despite its sun-staining, ‘Belinda’ is almost unbelievably white given that one grandparent is the super dark red, Yowie Flame ‘Krakatoa’.  With its wide segments and very heavy substance, in our opinion it represents a unique opportunity to introduce a radically different genetic background into white breeding.  ‘Kaitlin’ is a non-staining conventional Bryants' flat white of good shape and productivity.  Another stunning white result, later than B 39.
B 41 Glowing Gold ‘Central’Glowing Gold ‘Central’ x Perfect Bliss ‘The Glory’Perfect Bliss ‘The Glory’
July.  Yellow.  ‘Central’ is a July strong upright spiked good-shaped medium yellow with some mid-red lines through the petals and sepals.  It grows vigorously, without having excessively large foliage.  ‘The Glory’, a former NSW Small Standard nominee in the Sage Seedling of the Year, is a full shaped clear yellow with a red edge lip and a good upright spike.  Expect classic shapes here on strong spikes.
B 42 Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’ x Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’Perfect Gleam ‘Phoebe’
July.  Yellow.  ‘Emphatic’ is a very productive straight, tall, multi-spiking, clear, intense yellow of impressive quality and twenty plus blooms per stem.  We are looking to ‘Phoebe’ to contribute its well-presented lip, and a great outcome can be assured.
B 43 Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’ x Glowing Gold ‘Central’Glowing Gold ‘Central’
July.  Yellow.  ‘Wildcakes’ is a very productive multi-spiking Standard light yellow of good shape and substance with a red lip.  'Central' will maintain vigour, lift the flower counts up from about 10, and retain the red markings.  Very strong free flowering yellows with wide red edge lips on strong upright stems, a desirable outcome.
B 44 Pamela Rigby ‘Skyhook’Pamela Rigby ‘Skyhook’ x Firetail Necessity ‘Maria’
July.  Yellow alba.  Opportunities to breed with albas are limited, particularly because we find that many bruise and/or sustain cold damage too readily.  ‘Skyhook’ does not suffer from these problems and has nice well-balanced bright yellow alba blooms with bright yellow lips, a real eye-catcher.  It multiple spikes and flowers freely, with good numbers on a tall spike.  ‘Maria’, an ice green alba flowering for the first time, also seemed to be free of problems, and offers the prospect of shape improvement.
B 45 Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’Lancashire Khan ‘Evie’ x Flaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOCFlaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOC
July.  Red/Brown.  ‘Evie’ is an outstanding parent and has a well-deserved reputation for producing flowers of better quality than itself, including the FCC, Serhan's Passion ‘Marion’.  ‘Kirrawee’ has exceptional full shaped brown flowers with a wide very dark red/brown banded lip on a strong upright spike.  One can only dream of the outcome here, for colour and shape, not forgetting vigour and productivity.
B 46 Flaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOCFlaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOC x Valley Oracle ‘Kermit’Valley Oracle ‘Kermit’
July.  Honey Brown.  When we crossed the light green ‘Kermit’ with a brown Spicy Khan, (Firetail Intuition)Firetail Intuition 'Honey', we were much surprised by the impressive size and quality of the honey browns and khakis that flowered.  With the larger and better-shaped ‘Kirrawee’ we are expecting similar colours, however, the shape and lips will be from the top shelf.
B 47 Khan Flame ‘Mocca’ x Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’
July.  Brown.  ‘Mocca’ is well known, and has filled-in brown blooms with a nice red-barred lip on a good stem.  We think that over time, ‘Cassandra’ will come to be regarded as an important parent in the brown and orange colour ranges.  It has nearly all of the features most highly sought after, including very strong upright stems, good flower count, heavy substance and a naturally upright dorsal sepal giving a round flat bloom.  However, its lip is a clear weakness, being much too narrow and furled - ‘Mocca’ will fix this.
B 48 Valley Regent ‘Reggae’Valley Regent ‘Reggae’ x Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’Foxfire Fare ‘Cassandra’
July.  Red/Brown.  ‘Reggae’ has proven over time to be an extremely good parent, and not just for reds, but also browns, a good example being Regent Pepper ‘Jackson’Regent Pepper 'Jackson'.  With ‘Cassandra’ contributing great round flat shape, heavy substance and spike habit, not forgetting lip improvement from ‘Reggae’, this is an attractive cross.
B 49 Flaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOCFlaming Pepper ‘Kirrawee’ HCC AOC x Foxfire Stones ‘Keith Richards’Foxfire Stones ‘Keith Richards’
July.  Orange/Brown.  The awarded ‘Kirrawee’ appears several times in this list for good reason – it has many excellent properties.  This cross with the orange ‘Keith Richards’ seeks to enhance and consolidate those properties in a range of orange, brown and sunset tones.  A combination of two of the very best that are available - simply the best.
B 50 Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’ x Firetail Intuition ‘Honey’Firetail Intuition ‘Honey’
July.  Orange/Brown.  ‘Mojo Filter’ is a stunning dark orange overlaid with brown and catches the eye with its red and orange lip.  ‘Honey’ is a light brown with good flat shape and substance with the blooms well arranged on a powerful upright spike.  According to Greg Bryant, a decade or two ago you could not even give a brown away.  We now sense that browns are booming, and the brown crosses in this list will help set new standards.
B 51 Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’Glowing Candle ‘Emphatic’ x Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’
July/August.  Yellow.  ‘Wildcakes’ commemorates one of those times when Pam lost control of her mouth – she changed mid-metaphor "these will sell like wildfire/hot cakes".  We are always looking to bring different genetic qualities into our breeding and ‘Wildcakes’ offers all those Cronulla ‘The Khan’ and Yowie Flame ‘Krakatoa’ attributes that may be absent from traditional yellow breeding.  ‘Emphatic’ will provide clarity of colour and flower count giving strong yellows with red lips in the top bracket for super production.
B 52 Valley Regent ‘Reggae’Valley Regent ‘Reggae’ x Foxfire Crush ‘Hamlet’
July/August.  Red/Brown.  ‘Reggae’ is a productive late purple/red with an impressive reputation as a parent for both reds and browns.  ‘Hamlet’ is an intensely coloured orange yellow, overlaid dark brown with an impressive wide lip.  These will be darker and later than B 48, but similarly impressive with wide segments and heavy substance.
B 53 Valley Van Hoogenband 'Discus'Valley Van Hoogenband ‘Discus’ x Valley Zenith ‘Black's var.’Valley Zenith ‘Black's var.’
July/August.  Green.  ‘Discus’ is a very good shapely mid-green with a light red-barred lip, much admired by all.  ‘Black's var.’ has proven to be an outstanding parent, imparting its great wide red-barred lip, high flower counts and tall strong multiple spikes to its progeny.  Green development has been lagging behind many other colours but here is some catch up - you can expect great strong greens with red-barred white-throated lips, very rewarding.
B 54 Khan Flame ‘Mocca’ x Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’
July/August.  Brown.  ‘Mocca’ is well known, and has filled-in brown blooms with a nice red-barred lip on a good stem.  The fantastic ‘Mojo Filter’ will provide us with a bright new dimension in this colour range.  As mentioned before, we are going from the situation where browns could not be given away, to the point where they are just about flavour of the month!
B 55 Alexandra's Flame ‘Pink Impression’Alexandra's Flame ‘Pink Impression’ x King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’King Karri ‘Nikki Heat’
August.  Pink.  ‘Pink Impression’, from Gordon Giles, is a very productive, quality mid-pink flower with very tall upright spikes.  ‘Nikki Heat’, also very productive, is a darker pink with eye-catching deep pink-barred lip and will contribute to improved substance and shape, and somewhat shorter stems.
B 56 Alexandra's Flame ‘Pink Impression’Alexandra's Flame ‘Pink Impression’ x Yowie Pepper ‘Eight Plus’
August.  Pink.  ‘Pink Impression’ as described as above, freely produces an abundance of mid-pink blooms of good shape on very, very tall stems.  ‘Eight Plus’ is a mericlone shape mutation of very similar colour and has a more circular shape and wider segments!  Its strong upright stems, while by no means short, hopefully will reduce the stems to more manageable proportions.
B 57 Valley Regent ‘Reggae’Valley Regent ‘Reggae’ x Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’
August.  Red/Brown.  The third appearance for ‘Reggae’ and again with a brown!  We have seen the previous results and can be certain that this is a pathway to impressive dark reds and browns.  ‘Mojo Filter’ has many desirable qualities, not the least of which is effortless multi-spiking.  Here is a cross that adds new colours and mixes of colours to our range without sacrificing quality in the slightest.
B 58 Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’Doctor David Dunaway ‘Mojo Filter’ x Flaming Pepper ‘Havana’
August.  Orange/Brown.  With bright flowers of heavy substance, ‘Mojo Filter’ is a stunning dark orange overlaid with brown and catches the eye with its red and orange lip.  The full shaped orange to brown, red edge lipped ‘Havana’ was first used as a parent in the OE 32 cross from Battack, where it produced Regent Pepper ‘Jackson’Regent Pepper 'Jackson'.  Possibly one of the most stunning crosses listed here.
B 59 Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’Lunar Flame ‘Wildcakes’ x Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’Gwen Thomas ‘Old Gold’
August/September.  Yellow.  ‘Wildcakes’ has stems that are a bit short but it is a very productive multi-spiking light yellow standard of good shape and substance with a red lip.  We appreciate its completely different genetic background, which offers the prospect of more rapid development.  ‘Old Gold’ is, we believe, unmatched for its colour, which is an intense even dark yellow, with light red markings but clear of sun-staining, with a good wide red-banded lip.  Because it flowers late in the season in the warmer weather, its pods frequently do not survive, or have only limited germination.  This opportunity should not be missed!
